Plurals

What are plurals?

  • Plurals are multiple nouns. If we are speaking about more than one item we need to use a plural!

  • In English, most plurals are made by adding -s or -es to a noun

    • 1 dog →  2 dogs

    • 1 house → 2 houses

    • 1 box → 2 boxes

    • 1 hero → 2 heroes

  • Some plurals are irregular

    • Words that end in “f” or “fe” change to “ves”

      • 1 knife → 2 knives

      • 1 wife → 2 wives

    • Words ending in “consonant + y” change to “ies”

      • 1 city → 2 cities

      • 1 cherry → 2 cherries

  • Some plurals are completely irregular. These don’t have easy rules to remember. We just have to memorize them

    • 1 child → 2 children

    • 1 man → 2 men

    • 1 tooth → 2  teeth

    • 1 goose → 2 geese

  • Some nouns stay the same whether they are singular or plural

    • 1 sheep → 2 sheep

    • 1 fish →  2 fish

How do we use plurals?

  • Most are easy! If the noun is the subject, we have to change the verb

    • A woman is walking  into the store. → Some women are walking into the store.

    • Do you have a dog? → Do you have any dogs?

    • The book is on the shelf. → The books are on the shelf.

  • Some are more difficult

    • Some nouns look like plurals but are used as singular

      • Economics is an interesting subject (mathematics, physics, ethics, and politics are normally treated as singular).

      • Macaroni and cheese is my favorite dish (the two items are also the name of the dish).

    • Some singular nouns that come in pairs are treated as plurals

      • The scissors are over there.

        • OR The pair of scissors is over there.

      • Can I borrow some pants?

        • OR Can I borrow a pair of pants?
