  • We use prepositions to describe how things relate to each other. Prepositions of place include on, in and at.

    • The book is on the table.

    • Jessica is at the office.

    • Alex lives in Spain!

How do we use prepositions of place?

  • On

    • Used to describe the position of people or things resting on a surface:

      • The painting hangs on the wall.

      • My keys are on the table.

      • Jessica is on her bike.

    • Used for vehicles that hold many passengers.

      • We are on the bus right now.

      • I can’t talk, I just got on the plane.

      • I have to get on that train!

  • At

    • Used to describe a specific point or location:

      • Someone is at the door.

      • He is waiting at the bottom of the stairs.

      • They are at school right now.

  • In

    • Used to describe the position of things or people in a closed space defined by boundaries; this includes substances like gas and water:

      • We are in the pool.

      • That plane is high up in the air!

      • I am in Austria right now.

  • It is also used for smaller vehicles:

    • We are driving in the car.

    • She got in a taxi.
